My name is Alfonso Petrirena. Born and raised in Madrid, Spain from a basque family. I have been travelling, surfing and shooting photos for many years. A long while ago I decided to merge it all together and turn it into my profession.
Nowadays I live and work in Playa Negra, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. In this area nature, waves, wind and sun join together to create a perfect natural surf studio, and of course perfect surf! There are good waves everywhere and good conditions almost every day.

Almost every morning I take surf photos, whether in Playa Negra or nearby beaches, and put them up for sale. Usually I shoot from land but if conditions are good and I feel like it I use my waterproof gear in order to get closer to the action.
I work on request as well, mostly shooting from the water, and doing one (or several) day trips, most times to the National reserve of Santa Rosa where we find two of the best spots in the area: Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point. |

Often I work together with the Surf School in Playa Negra (specialized in kids and beginners) taking photos and video of the beginners in order to improve their skills, and so that they can take home a good souvenir. The kids love it, and so do their parents!
As well, and even though here in Guanacaste we live a bit apart from the rest of the world, I travel often in surf trips with locals and friends and attend contests, both local and ASP sanctioned, so I get to publish some of my photos in american and european magazines.
Although surfing and taking photos have no languages I'll point out that I'm perfectly fluent in English, French, of course in Spanish, and that I do very well in Portuguese, Italian, and then manage in some more.
In this site you can see a small portion of my work and, if you're interested, you can reach me through E mail (click here): alfonso@playanegraphotos.com, as by phone in Costa Rica: (+506) 88-61-55-26, in Spain: (+34) 696-47-37-01, or find me directly by the shore in Playa Negra!
